Construction Begins on New Pharmacology Research Laboratory

We, Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. started the construction of a new Pharmacology Research Laboratory building in April 10 at its Research Division site in Konohana-ku, Osaka.

The Pharmacology Research Laboratory conducts studies from new drug discovery to application for drug manufacturing approval. As R&D activities have expanded, however, the existing facilities has become too small. The company expects the new research laboratory will not only solve this issue but also ensure into the future the continued high level of reliability of its pharmacology studies.

The new Pharmacology Research Laboratory building will be a steel-framed, reinforced concrete structure with nine floors aboveground and one underground, for a total floor area of over 14,000 m2. Most modern features include GLP-compliant clean rooms with controlled airflow and access, and information facilities for processing and analyzing laboratory data electronically. Completion is expected in September 2002.

Not only we are increasing our prowess in research and development of new drugs with the construction of the new Pharmacology Research Laboratory, but we are also adding facilities for research into genomic science and other areas in the vanguard of pharmaceutical investigations to our existing research laboratory at the site.
