New Drug Manufacturing Wing Completed at Ehime Bio-Plant

After a year of work at its Ehime Bio-Plant (Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture), Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals, Co., Ltd. today completed construction of a new building for the manufacture of sterile pharmaceuticals, including preparations for injection.

The two-story reinforced concrete manufacturing building has a total area of approximately 2,700m², comprising the manufacturing section as well as administration and common storage on the first floor, and air conditioning and other mechanical facilities on the second floor. The addition of the new wing increases the area of the Ehime Bio-Plant from its former 15,400m² to a total of some 18,890m².

Last July, Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals expanded the Ibaraki Plant, its main production base in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, in order to provide a facility for the manufacture of experimental agents and drugs for injection as well as boost solid medicine production capacity. Nevertheless, in view of the substantial proportion of sterile preparations in its future drug production, the company decided to construct the new manufacturing facility within Ehime Bio-Plant, where there still was space for expansion.

Since its opening in 1987, Ehime Bio-Plant has produced intermediate (crude solution) "Sumiferon," a medicine containing natural interferon , through cell cultivation. The plant's long-developed expertise in sterile technology can be applied to the production of sterile drugs to be marketed in the future. Sumitomo plans to make Ehime Bio-Plant the company's base for the manufacture of sterile pharmaceuticals.
